Safety and Spraying Procedures
The Key to personal safety when handling pesticides is to avoid exposure to them!- Before using an herbicide, carefully read the label. The Label is the law.
- Always wear glasses, unlined liquid-proof gloves, long sleeves and long pants before ANY spraying commences.
- Avoid wearing anything made of leather or canvas, as these materials absorb and retain pesticides.
- Use the herbicide as soon as possible after obtaining it from the Weed Program. The longer the herbicide sits, the less potent it will become.
- Always spray away from you and never walk through freshly sprayed areas (carefully walk backwards).
- Never spray in winds over 8 mph. and always keep spray wand as low as possible to minimize drift.
- Never spray around any water, this includes puddles.
- The herbicide you are about to use is very concentrated. You only need to use a small amount in order to kill weeds so be conservative when spraying! Less is more!
- Spray very lightly under or around desired vegetation and avoid the use of herbicides if possible. Too much herbicide can kill trees!
- Make sure that desired grasses are well watered the day before an herbicide application. Drought and herbicide use together will overly stress the grass.
- Hands must be washed when finished spraying, before using the restroom or before any food or drink is consumed or tobacco products are used.
- Have an extra set of clothes close by in case of any spills.
- Should any spills occur, control the leak or spill, contain the spill area then clean it up. For cleanup information read the herbicide label and call the National Pesticide Information Center @ 1.800.858.7378.
- Keep people and animals away during herbicide application and until the herbicide has dried.
