Trail Regulations & Etiquette

We're all excited this time of year to get out on the trails; however we please ask that trail users avoid wet and muddy trails. Please be prepared to change your route should you encounter muddy conditions, and bike or hike through, not around muddy spots. This will help us avoid ruts and erosion, and keep our trails narrow! We are fortunate to have a fantastic multi-jurisdictional trail system, that requires signficant time and resources to maintain. Thank you for your cooperation!

Summit County Open Space Regulations of 2007, adopted by the Board of County Commissions pursuant to Resolution No. 2007-59, requires that users of Open Space and Trails be responsible for their conduct, utilize the Open Space in a manner which protects the properties, recognizes the rights, health and safety of other users, and that they be held strictly liable for conduct which violates the provisions of these Regulations.  Below is a brief list of trail etiquette for users to assist in compliance with Open Space Regulations:

Trail Etiquette

  • Respect other users, expect other users.
  • Be friendly and courteous.
  • Share the trail.  Ride, walk or run on the right, pass on the left.
  • Stay on the trail.  Creating your own trail (this includes bicyclists passing, or 'yielding' to others by riding off the trail!) or cutting switchbacks creates erosion, widens trails, damages habitat and causes new trails that can't be maintained.
Text Box:
  • All users yield to equestrians.
  • Motorized users yield to mechanized users and pedestrians.
  • Mechanized users yield to pedestrians.  Keep your bike under control and at a safe speed.
  • Downhill traffic should yield to uphill traffic.  When in doubt, give the other user the right of way.

  • Use unpaved trails only when they are dry - not muddy or wet - to avoid leaving ruts or prints.
  • Warn people when you are planning to pass.  Use your voice to warn equestrians, not bells or horns.  Bells or horns may frighten horses.
  • When a horse approaches, move off the trail and ask the rider for instructions.
  • Anticipate other trail users around corners and blind spots.
  • Ride within your ability at all times.
  • Respect wildlife.
  • Please use caution when using headphones.  You may not be able to hear people trying to warn you.
  • Leave no trace.  Pack out your litter.
  • Dogs should be kept on leashes and under control.
  • Respect private property.
