Healthy Futures Initiative

Healthy Futures Initiative is funded through a grant from SAMHSA, the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration.

Our mission is to unite our community through a collaborative system by promoting individual choices to encourage a healthy lifestyle free of alcohol and drug abuse.

Current Strategies and Projects
The Healthy Futures Initiative is currently working on a number of strategies to help reduce substance use in youth, and strengthen community agencies to work together. The 2014- 2015 areas of focus for the coalition are:

  1. Community Collaboration- to identify champions and maintain collaboration of groups, individuals, boards and organizations and provide opportunities for partnership through coalitions.
  2. Reduce Youth Substance Use- to create healthy community norms through targeted education, media campaigns and policy changes to decrease favorable attitudes to substance use, increase public awareness and encourage positive behavior change.
  3. Parent Education and Support Groups- to educate parents about relevant topics (marijuana legalization and underage drug and alcohol use, prescription drug abuse) and provide a continuum of parenting services to support healthy choices.
  4. Promote Youth leaders- Collaborate with Summit School District, CMC, local Ski Areas and businesses, as well as community partners to help youth and young adults become leaders in the community around implementing a healthy behavior model.
  5. Advance Healthy Social Norms- Summit County promotes family-focused events that are substance free while substance use at other community events is responsible and safe.

HFI consists of an executive board, an at-large coalition and four active workgroups:  Suicide Prevention, Marijuana Education, Young Adult Healthy Choices Task Force, and the H.S. Youth Advisory Council/M.S. Mentoring.
