Traffic Control and Road Signs
Sign and Speed Limit Policy
The County policy for signs and speed limits is as follows:
General: Signs provide regulatory, advisory, and general information to the public. Summit County follows a judicious and prudent policy towards the installation of signs. This policy minimizes sign pollution, information overload, and unneeded expense to the taxpayers.
Signs: Colorado Revised Statute 42-4-105 requires that all signs shall conform to the Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD). Therefore, all signs installed in unincorporated Summit County shall be per the policies outlined in the MUTCD. Signs may be installed that do not meet all the guidelines outlined in the MUTCD. However, clear documentation must be provided on the existing mitigating circumstances that justifies the deviation. Some of the mitigating factors that may be considered are: traffic volumes, accident frequency, road geometrics, and sight distances.
Speed Limits: Speed limits in unincorporated Summit County are those set by Colorado Revised Statutes 42-4-1101. These speed limits are:
25 MPH in any business district.
30 MPH in any residential area.
Speed limits in business districts and residential areas may be lowered when special hazards exist. Some of these hazards may include: road geometrics, sight distances, traffic volumes, and accident history.
All other roads will have speed limits based upon the 85th percentile speed developed from a speed study with the exception of where special hazards may exist.
