Permits
Building in Summit County today is becoming significantly more challenging than it has been in the past. It appears that the majority of the vacant lots left to develop or improve upon are difficult sites, consisting of one or more uniquely challenging issues including wetlands, steep slopes and/or access challenges. It is imperative to design all the improvements to fit the site. Structures and driveways that work in the Front Range do not fit the sloping, often wet terrain of Summit County. Therefore, the Engineering Department suggests you strongly consider using local architects and local contractors in the design and construction of your home. These people are aware of the design and construction issues associated with our high alpine environment.
The regulations applicable to development in Summit County are found in the Summit County Land Use and Development Code. Additional policies and regualtions may be found in the Grading and Excavation Manual.
Applications for a grading permit are submitted via the building permit process for all grading linked with structural development. For roads, subdivision improvements or other grading needs, apply with the Engineering Department separately.
