Road Maintenance And Repairs

Summit County Road and Bridge performs a variety of repairs and maintenance to roads under Summit County’s jurisdiction including road grading, pothole repair/patching, culvert/ditch cleaning, road/recpath sweeping and road/recpath striping. Traffic will be maintained through the construction zones, however delays should be expected. Please be courteous and reduce speed.

Road Grading

Road grading operations normally occur between May 1st and October 1st, weather permitting. Priority is given to those roads which have a high traffic volume. However, most roads will be graded at least once throughout the season. Magnesium chloride is applied to roads for dust control. Expect to encounter minor bumps on graveled County roads at times, as potholes and washboards may form before roads can be graded.

Pothole Repair/Patching

Asphalt pothole repairs and patching occurs throughout the season on an as needed basis.

Culvert/Ditch Cleaning

The Summit County Road and Bridge Department is responsible for maintaining the flow of water through culverts that cross under County roads. County crews periodically clean the banks of the drainage ditches and remove any obstacles obstructing the flow of water through the culvert.

Culverts that run under driveways or are on private property are the responsibility of the property owner. Residents are urged to keep their culverts free of ice, dirt and other debris.

Road/Recpath Sweeping

Sanding material left over from the winter season is swept off County maintained roads on an as needed basis. Recpaths are also swept periodically during the summer to remove mud at vehicle crossings and slide debris from cut slope areas.

Road/Recpath Striping

Summit County’s main roads are striped once per year. Not all paved roads under the County’s jurisdiction are striped, only those with a large volume of traffic. In addition, existing crosswalks are repainted every year.

Recpaths are striped on an as-needed basis per the direction of the Open Space and Trails Department. If you have questions or comments about Recpath striping, please call the Open Space and Trails Department at (970) 668-4060, or (970) 668-4087, Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.

If you feel that your road could use some attention, please don’t hesitate to let us know. We’ll repair the problem as quickly as weather conditions, temperatures, material supplies and equipment availability will allow. To report on the condition of your road, please contact the Summit County Road and Bridge Department at (970) 668-3590 or (970) 668-4231 between 7:30 a.m. and 4:00 p.m. Monday through Friday.
