2016 Construction Season Recap

Posted on October 18, 2016 at 4:14 PM by Julie Sutor

With construction season drawing to a close, we’d like to give you an update on the Summit Cove Loop Project and let you know about some changes to our phasing plan.

As blog followers may recall, we had originally planned to widen the causeway on Cove Boulevard this year. However, when we started rolling up our sleeves to get to work on the detailed design, we discovered that the required retaining wall and the condition of the existing culverts would make the project significantly more complex than originally expected. So construction on the causeway will not take place this year, but we will have the final design work completed soon.

The summer of 2016 did include successful reconstruction and repaving of four side streets within Summit Cove. This work was a nearly $700,000 investment in the neighborhood’s road conditions and was much needed because of very weak soils under the roads, which had caused a great deal of pavement roughness and damage. This work over the summer mitigated the poor soils and should ensure a long service life for these streets.

For 2017, we anticipate constructing additional bicycle/pedestrian shoulder improvements along Cove Boulevard. The exact location(s) and extent of this work will be finalized over the next few months as the County prepares the 2017 budget, but we do know that improvements in the Summit Cove Elementary School area will be completed next year. This is due in large part to our successful application for $350,000 in Safe Routes to School grant funding from the Colorado Department of Transportation.

As we move through the 2017 Summit County budget process, we’ll have a more details on 2017 construction plans. We look forward to seeing you in the Cove next summer as we continue our work to improve all modes of transportation through the neighborhood.
