The Summit County Building Inspection Department accepts all building permit applications and accompanying documents and routes them to the appropriate internal review agencies, such as the Planning Department, Engineering Department and Environmental Health Department. All permit applications must be submitted in person.
Submittal requirements depend on the scope of the project. Typically, a site plan is required if the proposed improvement affects the exterior of the building. Floor plans, elevations and stamped structural plans are required where applicable. See the permit submittal checklist (pdf) for a comprehensive list of potential submittal requirements. Fire hazard mitigation (FHM) will be reviewed at the permit submittal. FHM requirements are included in the 2012 Code Amendments (pdf).
At the time of permit submittal, the applicant will receive a signoff card noting any applicable external referral agencies. Typical referral agencies include water, sewer and fire districts and are indicated in the Summit County Building Department Matirx (pdf) All referral agency signoffs must be brought to the Building Department office prior to permit issuance.
Permit fees are based on both the square footage and valuation of the project. See our fee schedule for applicable fees. Potential fees include grading and excavating, plan review, building permit and development impact fees. The plan review fee is required to be paid at time of submittal. Any remaining fees are due at the time of permit issuance. The impact fee can be deferred by filling out the Voluntary Housing Allowance Restrictive Covenant (pdf) form.
