Summit County Public Health Orders

Summit County and the State of Colorado have public health orders in place to mitigate the spread of COVID-19. These orders place restrictions on a variety of activities, including commercial activities, social activities and community gatherings.

Business Physical Distancing Protocols

The Summit County Business Physical Distancing Protocols Form will help businesses identify and implement strategies to protect the health of their employees and members of the public by reducing opportunities for disease transmission. Businesses must:

  • Display a completed copy of their Physical Distancing Protocol at each public entrance
  • Distribute completed copies of their Physical Distancing Protocol to all employees
  • Post a completed copy of the Physical Distancing Protocol on business website, if applicable
  • Physical Distancing Protocols do not have to be submitted to Public Health for review

Non-Critical Retail

Effective May 8, 2020, all establishments providing non-critical retail services, as defined by the State of Colorado, may open up to fifty (50%) capacity or less for in-person services if the establishment meets several standards. Proprietors must follow CDPHE Safer at Home guidance, and complete the Summit County Business Physical Distancing Protocols Form to outline health-protection strategies that would safely allow for activity by members of the public inside a physical establishment. The number of customers in the store is limited to 1 person per 100 square feet of retail areas, and all individuals, including customers and employees, must maintain 6 feet of distance from each other.

Personal Services

Effective May 1, 2020, Personal Services, as defined by the State of Colorado, must complete the Summit County Business Physical Distancing Protocols form, prior to performing any services. Copies of the completed form, and requisite signage for the public and employees, must be posted at all public entrances, in plain view to staff, customers and others onsite.

Essential Businesses

All essential businesses (providing groceries, pharmacy products, pet food and supplies, hardware, office supplies) that remained open to the public during the Stay At Home Order must complete the Summit County Business Physical Distancing Protocols form by May 4. Copies of the completed form, and requisite signage for the public and employees, must be posted at all public entrances, in plain view to staff, customers and others onsite.

State of Colorado Public Health Order

Coloradans should continue staying home as much as possible, and vulnerable populations, including seniors, should continue staying home, only leaving when absolutely necessary.

"Together, Coloradans have been effective in leveling and flattening the curve, but life will remain much more dangerous than usual these next few months and we should all wear masks when in public. Safer at Home is by no means a free-for-all," Gov. Jared Polis said. "We all have a personal responsibility to slow the spread of the virus and must find a way of living that is psychologically and economically sustainable for Coloradans.”

Summit County Variance Request

Summit County has requested a variance from the state public health order, asking for allowances for additional commercial and social activity. Summit County requested a variance to allow alpine skiing, short-term vacation rentals and dine-in activity in local restaurants.

Variance application status: On May 24, CDPHE approved our variance request to reopen alpine skiing. CDPHE denied our request to reopen dine-in activity at restaurants and short-term vacation rentals. On May 25, the governor announced that restaurants would be allowed to open statewide at 50% capacity, beginning May 27.
